Our Story

Born from Loss,
Built on Solidarity

In the summer of 1995, over 200,000 Serbs were forcibly displaced from the Krajina region of Croatia — one of the largest refugee crises in post-war Europe. Entire villages were abandoned. Families lost everything they had built over generations.

Two decades later, in 2016, Friends of Krajina was founded by diaspora members who refused to let their people be forgotten. Today, we work on the ground — funding scholarships, supporting small businesses, rebuilding homes, and reviving the farms that sustained generations.

Lives Changed by the Numbers

The Region

The Land of Krajina

The Krajina — meaning "borderland" — is a broad inland region spanning much of Croatia: from the Dalmatian highlands and the river valleys of Kordun and Banija near the Bosnian border, northward through Western Slavonia, and east across the fertile plains of Eastern Slavonia. For centuries, Serbs settled this land, building villages, farms, and a distinct cultural identity shaped by Orthodox faith and the rhythms of agricultural life.

Operation Storm in August 1995 changed everything. In four days, over 200,000 Krajina Serbs fled or were expelled — the largest single forced displacement of people in post-war Europe. Most have never returned.

The Krajina Živi (Krajina Lives) project documents this heritage and assists those who wish to return, rebuild, and reclaim their birthright.
