Krajina was always farming land. We help it become farming land again.
Rooted in the Land
For centuries before 1995, the Krajina was defined by its relationship with the land. Serbian families farmed its fertile valleys and hillsides, producing wheat, maize, livestock, plums, and vegetables. Agriculture wasn't just an economic activity — it was identity, routine, and the foundation of community life.
Displacement severed this connection. Those who fled left their fields behind. Many elderly who stayed or returned have been unable to farm properly — without equipment, without the physical capacity to do it alone, and without access to markets for what they produce.
Our Farming Assistance Program works to restore this connection. We provide the physical tools — seeds, equipment, livestock — alongside the practical knowledge, market connections, and cooperative structures that make small-scale farming economically viable in the modern world.
Since 2015, we have supported over 350 farming families. Some are returning residents reclaiming abandoned fields. Others are elderly farmers who needed equipment to keep going. Many are now selling produce through regional cooperatives and, increasingly, to diaspora buyers abroad.
What We Offer
Certified, high-yield seeds for wheat, maize, sunflower, vegetables, and fruit trees — selected for Krajina's climate and soil conditions.
Tillers, ploughs, sprayers, and hand tools — either distributed directly or available through our shared equipment program for smaller holdings.
Assistance with small livestock — chickens, pigs, cattle — including starter animals, feed support, and veterinary care coordination.
Modern farming techniques, soil management, organic certification pathways, and food safety standards — workshops run seasonally in partnership with agricultural schools.
Regular veterinary visits coordinated for livestock holders, vaccination programs, and access to emergency vet consultations through our partner network.
Connecting farmers with local markets, cooperative purchasing agreements, processing facilities, and diaspora buyers looking for traditional Krajina produce.
Farmer's Story
Brana is 72 years old. She never left Krajina — she stayed through the displacement, too old to flee and too rooted to leave. For years she tended a small kitchen garden, selling what little she could at the local market.
In 2022, we provided her with a new tiller, quality seeds, and arranged monthly veterinary visits for her small flock. Her yields have tripled. She now sells through our cooperative arrangement to a grocery chain in Zagreb.
"My father cleared these fields with his hands. My grandfather before him. During the hard years I thought it would all be forgotten. Now people are buying what comes from this earth again. That means everything."
